Burckhardt's 1860 synthesis crystallized the modern idea of the Renaissance as a historical period, building on Vasari's rinascita and Michelet's 1855 La Renaissance. Before that, it was a polemic, a political tool, and a way for 19th-century Europeans to explain their own modernity to themselves.
