The short answer is: your red is probably not my red. And the longer answer involves three layers of reasons why, each more unsettling than the last.
The Hardware Behind Color Qualia
Color vision starts with cone cells in your retina. Most humans have three types (S, M, and L cones), each tuned to a different range of wavelengths. But “tuned to a range” is doing a lot of heavy lifting in that sentence, because the exact peak sensitivity of your cones is not the same as mine.
The L cone (the one sensitive to longer wavelengths, roughly what we call “red”) has a peak response that varies between 564 and 580 nanometers depending on the individual. That is a 16-nanometer spread. The M cone (“green”) ranges from 534 to 545 nanometers. These are not small differences. They mean that the raw signal your brain receives from the same physical light is measurably different from the signal my brain receives.
It gets stranger. The ratio of L to M cones in a healthy, color-normal human eye varies from roughly 1:1 to more than 4:1. Some people have four times as many “red” cones as “green” cones; others have equal numbers. Despite this, both groups pass standard color vision tests and agree on color names. The brain compensates. But compensating is not the same as seeing the same thing.
And then there are the outliers. Roughly 8% of men have some form of color vision deficiency (what used to be called color blindness), meaning their cone cells are shifted or missing entirely. On the other end, an estimated 12% of women carry a gene variant that gives them four types of cone cell instead of three. In the 2010s, neuroscientist Gabriele Jordan identified a woman, subject cDa29, who appeared to be a functional tetrachromatA person with four types of cone cells in their eyes instead of the usual three, allowing them to perceive color distinctions invisible to most people.: someone who genuinely perceives colors the rest of us cannot distinguish. She sees a richer world than you do. You would never know from talking to her.
The Software Is Different
Even if two people had identical eyes (they do not), their brains would still process color differently, because language and culture shape how the brain categorizes what it sees.
The Himba people of northern Namibia have five basic color terms where English has eleven. Crucially, their language does not draw a boundary between what English speakers call “blue” and “green.” In controlled experiments, Himba participants shown a circle of green tiles with one blue tile among them struggled to pick it out. English speakers found it instantly. But when shown a circle of green tiles with one slightly different shade of green, the Himba spotted the odd one out far faster than English speakers could.
This is not about eye hardware. This is about the brain sorting incoming signals into categories, and those categories being shaped by the language you grew up speaking. The labels you learned as a child literally change which differences your visual system treats as important and which it smooths over. If you never learned a word that separates blue from green, your brain genuinely processes them as more similar than a brain that did. The Dress Proved It
In February 2015, a photograph of a dress broke the internet. Some people saw it as white and gold. Others saw it as blue and black. (It was blue and black.) The disagreement was not about preference or description. People were having genuinely different visual experiences from the same stimulus.
Neuroscientist Bevil Conway and colleagues showed that the split came from unconscious assumptions about lighting. People who assumed the dress was in daylight discounted the blue wavelengths and saw white and gold. People who assumed artificial light discounted the warm wavelengths and saw blue and black. A 2017 study with over 13,000 participants confirmed that beliefs about whether the dress was in shadow predicted which colors people reported.
The Dress was a rare case where the ambiguity was large enough to split the population visibly. But the same process happens constantly, invisibly. Your brain is always making assumptions about the light in a scene, always subtracting what it thinks is illumination to guess what color the object “really” is. But it means you are never seeing the raw wavelengths. You are seeing your brain’s best guess, filtered through your particular hardware, your particular life experience with light, and your particular neural wiring.
The Deepest Problem: Color Qualia Are Private
Here is where it gets genuinely uncomfortable. Even if we could account for every difference in cone cells, neural wiring, and linguistic categories, we would still have no way to know whether your subjective experience of red is the same as mine. Philosophers call these raw subjective sensations “qualia,” and color qualia are the paradigmatic example of something that resists external verification.
Philosopher John Locke raised this problem in 1689. He imagined that the sensation produced by a violet in one person’s mind could be the same as the sensation produced by a marigold in another’s, and vice versa, and neither would ever know. Both would call violets “violet” and marigolds “yellow.” Both would agree that violets and marigolds look different. But their inner experiences could be completely inverted.

In 1995, philosopher David Chalmers gave it a name: the Hard Problem of ConsciousnessThe question of why brain processes give rise to subjective experience — why there is something it is like to feel pain or see a color, rather than just neural activity.. The “easy” problems of consciousness (explaining how the brain processes wavelengths, categorizes colors, generates behavior) are hard enough. The Hard Problem asks: why is there any subjective experience at all? Why does seeing red feel like something?
We can map cone responses, trace neural pathways, and predict behavior. But we cannot crawl inside another person’s head and see what red looks like to them. The technology does not exist. The conceptual framework for such technology does not exist. We are each locked inside our own experience, naming colors in a shared language that may paper over fundamentally private sensations. Why This Matters Beyond Philosophy Class
This is not just an intellectual curiosity. It has real consequences.
Eyewitness testimony. When a witness says a getaway car was “dark blue,” what they mean by dark blue is shaped by their cone ratios, their lighting assumptions, and their linguistic categories. We already know eyewitness memory is unreliable. The color perception problem makes it worse: the witness is not just misremembering. They may have genuinely seen something different.
Design and accessibility. Color choices in interfaces, signage, and medical imaging assume a shared perceptual experience that does not exist. The roughly 300 million people worldwide with color vision deficiency are the visible tip of a much larger iceberg of perceptual variation.
Cross-cultural communication. When a paint company sells “ocean blue” globally, it is relying on an agreement about color that becomes shakier the more you examine it. Languages that do not separate blue from green are not failing to see a difference. They are succeeding at a different categorical scheme.
Understanding consciousness itself. Color is the cleanest, most intuitive example of a subjective experience that resists objective verification. If we cannot solve the color problem, we probably cannot solve consciousness. And if we cannot solve consciousness, every claim about machine sentience, animal experience, and the nature of the mind is built on a foundation we cannot inspect.
What We Actually Know
Here is what the science can say with confidence: the physical stimulus (electromagnetic radiation at specific wavelengths) is the same for everyone in the same room. The hardware that receives it (cone cells) varies measurably between individuals. The software that processes it (neural pathways shaped by language and experience) varies even more. And the subjective experience that results from all of this is, as of 2026, completely inaccessible to anyone other than the person having it.
Your red is probably not my red. We just happen to agree on the name. The color qualia are yours alone.

The claim sounds like stoned-freshman philosophy, but it rests on three categories of empirical evidence and one genuinely unresolved conceptual problem. Each layer is independently sufficient to doubt that two people experience the same color from the same stimulus.
Layer 1: Retinal Variation in the Photoreceptor Mosaic
Human color vision depends on three classes of cone photoreceptor (S, M, L), each expressing a different opsinA light-sensitive protein found in cone cells that determines which wavelengths of light they respond to, forming the molecular basis of color vision. protein with a characteristic spectral sensitivity curve. But “characteristic” does not mean “identical across individuals.”
The OPN1LW gene encoding the L-cone opsin is highly polymorphic. One study found 85 allelic variants in a sample of 236 men. These polymorphisms shift the peak spectral sensitivity of the L cone across a range of approximately 564 to 580 nm. The M cone shows similar, if smaller, variation (534 to 545 nm). The functional consequence is that the same monochromatic light stimulus produces different photoreceptor activation ratios in different individuals.
Beyond opsin variation, the spatial distribution of cone types across the retinal mosaic differs dramatically. Studies using adaptive optics imaging have measured L:M cone ratios in color-normal subjects ranging from approximately 1.0:1 to 4.2:1. Despite this nearly fourfold variation in receptor composition, subjects perform equivalently on standard colorimetry tasks, suggesting substantial post-receptoral normalization. A 2019 study in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences used photostimulation-induced phase dynamics to classify individual cone types in living human eyes, confirming that the mosaic is far more variable than classical models assumed.
At the extremes, the variation is more dramatic still. Approximately 8% of males carry X-linked opsin gene mutations producing anomalous trichromacy or dichromacy. On the other end, an estimated 12% of females are heterozygous carriers of color vision deficiency alleles, giving them four distinct opsin genes and, potentially, four cone classes. In the 2010s, Gabriele Jordan identified a subject (cDa29) who demonstrated functional tetrachromacy: the ability to make chromatic discriminations along a perceptual dimension unavailable to trichromats. The result remains contested (few subjects with four cone types show functional four-dimensional color vision), but even one confirmed case proves the perceptual space is not fixed.
Layer 2: Linguistic and Cultural Modulation of Color Categories
Post-receptoral processing does not operate on a blank slate. Categorical perception of color is modulated by the linguistic categories available to the observer.
The foundational work is Berlin and Kay’s 1969 Basic Color Terms, which proposed a universal evolutionary sequence for color term acquisition across languages. Their claim of universality has been substantially qualified by subsequent cross-linguistic research. Of particular relevance: languages vary in whether they lexically distinguish blue from green, and this distinction has measurable perceptual consequences.
The Himba of northern Namibia use a five-term color system that groups what English speakers call “blue” and “green” under a single term (“buru”). In experimental paradigms, Himba speakers show reduced categorical perception at the English blue-green boundary: they are slower to detect a blue target among green distractors than English speakers are. Conversely, they show enhanced discrimination at category boundaries that English does not mark. This is not an attentional effect alone. EEG studies on related phenomena show that linguistic color categories modulate early visual processing (within 200 ms of stimulus onset), suggesting the effect operates at the level of perceptual encoding, not just post-perceptual labeling.
The mechanism is likely top-down modulation of V4 and adjacent color-selective cortical areas by language networks, primarily left-lateralized. This produces a genuine perceptual difference: two physically identical stimuli that fall on opposite sides of a linguistic category boundary are perceived as more different than two stimuli that fall within the same category, even when the physical distance in color space is equated. The 2015 phenomenon of “The Dress” provided an unintended population-scale experiment in color perception. A single photograph produced stable, bimodal perceptual reports: approximately 57% of viewers reported white/gold, 30% reported blue/black, and 13% reported blue/brown, with high within-subject consistency over time.
The explanation involves color constancy: the visual system’s attempt to infer surface reflectance by discounting the illuminant. Conway and colleagues demonstrated that the photograph’s chromatic ambiguity fell at a point where the visual system could not resolve whether the illumination was bluish (daylight) or yellowish (artificial). Individual differences in the prior assumptions about illumination, likely shaped by lifetime light exposure statistics, determined which percept dominated.
A 2017 study published in the Journal of Vision (Wallisch, 2017) with over 13,000 participants confirmed that explicit beliefs about shadow conditions predicted perceptual reports. The study demonstrated that the perceptual split was not random but correlated with stable individual differences in how the visual system models illumination, likely reflecting differences in the statistical priors built up through years of visual experience.
This is a Bayesian inference problem. The brain receives an ambiguous signal (retinal image) and must infer the most likely cause (surface color under unknown illumination). The prior distributions over illuminant spectra differ between individuals because they are learned from experience. Layer 4: Color Qualia and the Explanatory Gap
The three layers above are empirical. The fourth is conceptual, and it is the one that has resisted resolution for over three centuries.
In Book II, Chapter XXXII of An Essay Concerning Human Understanding (1689), Locke proposed that the idea produced by a violet in one mind might be what a marigold produces in another, with no possible method of detection. It is a claim that inversion would be undetectable, which, if true, implies that subjective color experience (qualia) is not fully determined by physical or functional properties.

C.L. Hardin has argued that a full spectral inversion would be behaviorally detectable because color space is not symmetric (there are more discriminable shades between red and blue than between green and yellow). This constrains but does not eliminate the problem: partial inversions or non-systematic differences in qualia could remain undetectable. The explanatory gap between neural correlates of color processing and the subjective character of color experience remains open.
The current state of the field, honestly reported: we have strong evidence that two people viewing the same stimulus receive different retinal signals, process them through different learned categories, and apply different perceptual priors. Whether their resulting subjective experiences differ in kind (not just in degree) is a question we do not yet have the tools to answer.
Practical Implications
Forensic testimony. Color identification in witness reports compounds the well-documented unreliability of eyewitness memory. A witness’s report of a “dark blue” vehicle reflects their particular cone mosaic, their learned color categories, and their implicit illumination model. None of these are shared with the jurors evaluating the testimony.
Display engineering and colorimetry. Standard observer functions (CIE 1931, CIE 2006) are population averages. They assume a single color-normal observer who does not exist. Wide-gamut displays and HDR content expose the gap between standardized color spaces and individual perceptual variation.
Cross-cultural design. Color coding in safety signage, data visualization, and medical imaging presupposes shared categorical boundaries that are linguistically and culturally contingent.
Consciousness research. Color qualia remain the paradigmatic test case for theories of consciousness. Any theory that claims to explain subjective experience must eventually account for why two brains with different hardware, different learned priors, and different linguistic categories produce (or fail to produce) the same phenomenal experience from the same physical stimulus. As of 2026, none do.
The Honest Summary
The electromagnetic radiation is shared. The retinal transduction is not. The categorical processing is not. The perceptual inference is not. And whether the resulting subjective experience is shared is a question that remains, after 337 years, exactly where Locke left it.
